Melisa sat cross-legged on her bed, the Old World dictionary Zephyra had given her spread out before her like some ancient, mystical tome. Which, to be fair, it kind of was.
[Alright, let's do this,] she thought, cracking her knuckles. [Time to make some magic happen. Literally.]
She handled the book with the reverence of a priest touching a holy relic, terrified of so much as creasing a page. The last thing she needed was a pissed-off Zephyra on her case for damaging a priceless artifact.
"Okay," Melisa muttered, flipping through the pages. "Mind... influence... persuasion... come on, give me something good."
Her tail swung back and forth behind her as she scanned the pages, occasionally pausing to jot down a promising word or phrase.
She loved this. This part of practicing magic was more addictive than any drug to her.
After what felt like twenty minutes but was probably closer to an hour, Melisa had a list of three words and three spell lines that seemed promising. She stood up, stretching her arms above her head with a groan.
"Time to test this bad boy out," she grinned, grabbing Isabella's wand from her nightstand.
Melisa took a deep breath, focusing on the words she'd chosen. She traced the first spell line in the air, her movements precise and deliberate.
"Mentis influentia persere!"
She waited, holding her breath.
Nothing happened.
"Well, shit," Melisa sighed, flopping back onto the bed. "Back to the drawing board, I guess."
She paced around her room, muttering to herself and occasionally gesticulating wildly as if conducting an invisible orchestra of failure.
[There has to be something I'm missing. Some key component that'll make this work.]
Melisa's eyes fell on the dictionary again. On a whim, she flipped it open to a random page.
And there it was, staring her right in the face:
"Pheromones," Melisa read aloud, her eyes widening. "Wait, there's an Old Tongue word for pheromones?"
