Chapter 85 Software Development and Affinities*

{Melisa}

Melisa paced her room, her tail swishing nervously behind her.

With the gala just two days away now, her schedule was packed with preparations and last-minute re

"Mel, dear, you don't need to ask that."

---

As the door closed behind Isabella, Melisa took a moment to catch her breath, her body still thrumming with energy from their intense encounter.

She glanced around the room, noting the various... evidence of their activities.

[Right, better clean up first,] she thought, her tail swishing with determination as she set about tidying the room.

Once everything was back in order, Melisa settled at her desk, pulling out parchment, quills, and her notes on Life and Blood Magic.

Her crimson eyes gleamed with excitement.

[Time to put that software dev brain to use,] she mused, a small smile on her lips.

Melisa began by breaking down the spells she'd learned into their component parts. The incantations, the spellsigns, the flow of energy. She drew diagrams, mapping out the patterns and connections between different spellsigns and incantations.

As she worked, her tail swished back and forth, occasionally knocking over a stack of papers in her enthusiasm. But Melisa hardly noticed, too absorbed in her analysis.

[It's just coding,] she reminded herself, her quill flying across the parchment. [Each spell is like a function, with inputs and outputs. If I can understand the underlying logic...]

Hours passed, the sun slowly sinking toward the horizon as Melisa delved deeper into her research.

She barely noticed the growling of her stomach or the stiffness in her muscles, too engrossed in the puzzle before her.

Finally, as the last rays of sunlight faded from her window, Melisa sat back, her mind buzzing with theories and possibilities.

[I think I'm onto something here,] she thought, her eyes scanning the complex diagrams and notes spread across her desk. [But how can I test these theories?]

The answer came to her in a flash of inspiration, causing her to bolt upright in her chair.

[Of course! If I want to understand how to heal, I need to understand how people can be hurt.]

---

{Javir}

Javir sat at her desk, fingers drumming an impatient rhythm on the polished wood.

Her eyes kept darting to the clock on the wall, counting down the minutes until her colleague was due to arrive with the documents she'd requested.

[Come on, Elodie,] she thought, suppressing a sigh. [You're usually so punctual.]

As if summoned by her thoughts, a sharp knock sounded at the door.

"Enter," Javir called, straightening in her chair.

Elodie, a thin, tall woman with big, brown eyes, stepped into the office. In her hands, she clutched a thick envelope sealed with the royal crest.

"Here are the documents you requested, Professor Folden," Elodie said, placing the envelope on Javir's desk. "Though I must admit, I'm curious why you didn't simply go to the palace archives yourself. It would have been faster, and you certainly have the clearance, from-"

Javir's lips thinned, a flicker of distaste crossing her features.

"I'd rather have my nipples cut off than be back in that place without absolutely needing to," she said, cutting her off.

"Whoa."

Javir shrugged.

"The less I have to deal with court politics and bureaucracy, the better."

Elodie raised an eyebrow.

"Oh? I distinctly recall you cherishing those sorts of opportunities."

[Yeah,] Javir looked away. [Back when I still thought I alone could change things.]

Out of her thoughts, Javir snorted.

"Hardly. I'll leave the schmoozing and politicking to those who enjoy it. I have more important things to focus on."

Her hand rested protectively on the envelope, her mind already racing with the possibilities its contents held.

Inside were detailed accounts of Life and Blood Magic practices, information that was typically kept under tight lock and key.

[Information that could change everything for Melisa,] Javir thought, careful to keep her expression neutral.

Elodie, ever observant, noticed Javir's protective gesture.

"Must be some important research you're working on," she commented lightly. "Anything you can share?"

Javir shook her head, offering a tight smile.

"I'm afraid not, Elodie. This is a... personal project. Nothing to do with the academy."

It wasn't entirely a lie. While the information would certainly benefit one of her students, Javir's interest in Melisa's unique abilities went far beyond her role as a professor.

[If only they knew,] Javir mused, thinking of her colleagues and their narrow-minded views.

Aloud, she said:

"Thank you for bringing this to me, Elodie. I appreciate your discretion in this matter."

Elodie nodded, recognizing the dismissal for what it was. As she turned to leave, she paused at the door.

"Javir," she said, her voice softening slightly. "Whatever you're working on... be careful. The kind of magic detailed in those documents... it's not to be trifled with."

Javir met her colleague's concerned gaze steadily.

"I'm always careful, Elodie. You know that."

Once the door closed behind Elodie, Javir let out a long breath. She stared at the envelope, feeling the weight of responsibility settling on her shoulders.

[Am I doing the right thing?] she wondered, not for the first time. [Encouraging Melisa to delve deeper into these dangerous magics?]

But then she remembered the look in Melisa's eyes when she'd successfully cast that Blood Magic spell.

The raw potential, the hunger for knowledge, the determination to push the boundaries of what was thought possible.

Javir broke the seal on the envelope. She wanted to make the information here more palatable, though she didn't doubt Melisa would comprehend this stuff if given the time.

As she began sifting through the documents, Javir's mind wandered to the upcoming event.

The gala would be a pivotal moment, not just for Melisa, but for all of them.

[We're playing a dangerous game, admittedly,] Javir acknowledged silently. [But the potential rewards... Blood Magic is considered by many to be the strongest individual school of magic, with equal parts defensive capabilities and offensive capabilities. If Melisa can use Blood Magic at will, free of the requirements of sacrifices...]

Javir sighed.

[That girl is too much.]
